Feeling left behind

Published on Oct 01, 2008

I'm so glad you raised this issue!

I, for one, feel excluded by Moses Znaimer's reclassification of older adults. My children are of the boomer generation, and at least one of them qualifies, by his standards, to be a Zoomer. Where does that leave me?

I also feel excluded by some of the advertisements appearing in publications addressed to older people. Images of grey-haired couples with youthful faces enjoying themselves at travel destinations or in loving embraces are not relevant to older women, most of whose marriages are over and most of whom live alone.

We may have the urge, but we don't "do it" because we have no partner.

Most of us are no longer concerned with travel or resort vacations. Our major concern is to maintain our independence for as long as possible, with assistance from good home care when it is needed. That is not to say that we are not active. We take courses, attend lectures, theatre and concerts. We are active in community organizations.

Our grandchildren are adults and, if we're lucky, we have warm relationships with them.

I suspect that the magazine of which Mr. Znaimer is now editor-in-chief will not reflect the interests and concerns of my generation and, once again, we will be shunted into the margins.
