Can somebody please explain to me why so many people are pumped about the Olympic torch relay? Otherwise reasonable and rational people are lining streets across Canada to clap and cheer for what is a completely barren and meaningless exercise in corporate-generated hype. Are people feeling some sort of mystical link to ancient Greece? Well they should know that while lighting a torch has ties to ancient Olympia, the relay itself was invented by Hitler as a propaganda tool – so hardly a noble or glorious historical origin.
Now, it is just dumb, silly and empty. That’s my view anyway – I see ludicrous mass hysteria over something with zero natural value. And so seriously, I ask my fellow readers – why the excitement? What’s the point?
