Paint trends are increasingly being influenced by the world of fashion, says Canadian PARA Paints. "Study the window displays of high-end clothing stores or flip through fashion magazines and you’ll get a good sense of what paint colours are in style this season," says Melanie Rice, colour advisor for PARA and a member of the Color Marketing Group, which predicts trends for up to five to 10 years.
"You’ll also get a good idea of what colours work well together, looks you can adapt for your home by mix and matching wall paint, furnishings and accessories," says Rice.
For example, spring florals that emerge on the fashion scene can show up on the wall in nature-infused shades of colour-rich flowers like hydrangeas, hibiscus and orchids – pinks, yellows and grassy greens – balanced by other floral hues such as soft grey or white.
In addition, as today’s fashions draw from faraway cultures, Asian reds, Indian golds and deep Far Eastern purples can liven up a room, offset by more soothing shades of sand or stone.
Similar to pairing a designer piece with a wardrobe staple, this combination delivers a sophisticated contrast, Rice says.
