Don't worry, breathe easy

A research project at the University of Regina, Sask. has seniors there breathing easier about their health concerns.

The project, led by Michelle Bourgault-Fagnou, a doctoral student in clinical psychology, under the supervision of Dr. Heather Hadjistavropoulos, addresses the problems caused by concerns over health conditions in the 60-plus crowd.

"They may have high blood pressure and they're worried about a heart attack. They may have chronic pain and they might be worried that it is fairly serious or their health condition is creating a lot of anxiety and maybe they have a depressed mood or an inability to cope with everyday things," says Bourgault-Fagnou.

Her program, adapted from one for younger adults worried about their health, offers some education about common concerns and discusses how to be more realistic about health, incorporates relaxation strategies and looks at behaviours that may be increasing the anxiety and finds ways to change those.

The study is ongoing and results will be published in journal articles and presented at conferences to give healthcare professionals a new resource to help older adults who are worried about health issues.
